Ferrari F640-189, Custom Ixo 1/43

Now, something interesting for those who like to customize their model cars, this was Ferrari F640-189 made by Ixo, La Storia, in scale 1/43. This is model of car driven in Japanese Grand Prix, and this one was winner on that race by Gerhard Berger. This type of Ferrari F640-189 is later version of the car. During that 1989 season Ferrari had two versions of the F640-189 car and this one is newer one. On the first race in the season Ferraris first driver Nigel Mansell won the race. The winning car was F640-189 but early version, and I wanted to have that one. So I decided to make it out of the one damaged I have. Few years ago I made an order on CK-modelcars and one of the cars came with broken front wing. Actually the right part of the wing was missing. When I saw that I contacted the shop, and they have sent me the new undamaged model on their cost. So I had this damaged one for quite a while when I decided to make something of it.


 Sada nešto što bi moglo da bude zanimljivo vama koji volite da radite prerade modela. Ovo je Ferrari F640-189 koji proizvodi Ixo za svoju seriju La Storia u razmjeri 1/43 kojom se na blogu najčešće i bavimo. Ovaj model je u originalu bio model auta koji je pobijedio na predposlednjoj trci u sezoni 1989. godine, na stazi Suzuka na Velikoj Nagradi Japana. Kad sam prije par godina kupio ovaj model isprva mi je stigao oštećen model sa sajta, što sam javio vlasnicima prodavnice, nakon čega mi je poslat novi model koji je bez oštećenja. Posle nekog vremena sam konačno odlučio što da uradim sa ovim modelom. Odluka je pala, kako je Ferrari te godine imao dvije verzije ovog modela, odlučio sam da napravim raniju verziju ovog bolida. I tako je počeo projekat izrade bolida koji je pobijedio na prvoj trci te sezone na Velikoj Nagradi Brazila.

Prvo što je trebalo da se uradi je da se rastavi model. Moram priznati da je strašno težak posao rastaviti na lijep način ovaj Ixo model. Kao i svi Ixo i ovaj ja imao trouglaste šarafe koji su ubitačni za odvrnuti. Naravno kad to uspijete što i nije tako lako, trebate da odvojite zalijepljene djelove. Sa pojedinim djelovima morate da budete posebno oprezni jer na formulama ima dosta djelova koji su tanki i vrlo krti. Neke djelove je potrebno da pažljivo odsiječete skalpelom.

First you have to do is to disassemble the model. And that with these Ixos is not easy at all. It is very difficult. They have those triangular sided screws that are almost impossible to turn, but when you managed that, next thing that is difficult is doing apart glued parts. Be very careful with all thin plastic parts, because these are really fragile.   
As you can see, there are images of the result, and most of the steps. Many alteration are made on the model, but first was chopping off top air intake part, and reducing it to proper size. If you are familiar with Ferrari F1 you will notice that I made mistake in sizing it, and it is a few millimeters too short. But I decided not to fix it. “Why?” You ask, well because I simply wanted to finish it at last. The paint I used for it was Revell red paint (if someone is interested in exact color, please ask) and I am surprised how nice it has covered the surface.

Kao što vidite tu su slike završenog proizvoda, i skoro svih koraka. Na žalost nisam sve korake dokumentovao jer tokom rada na modelu nisam uvijek u mogućnosti da fotografišem. Prije nego počnem da objašnjavam izmjene na modelu i kako su napravljene, moram da kažem da je gornji dio koji je izmijenjen, na kraju ispao previše nizak. Iako sam shvatio da je greška popravljiva, nisam više imao živaca da radim na ovom projektu tako da sam ostavio ovaj model takav, feleričan.
Prvi korak u izmjenama na modelu je bio to da se gornji usisnik otkine. Ovo sam uradio kao što sam rekao, tako da sam malo pretjerao. Svakako dalje je taj dio napravljen i prefarban i Revelovom bojom, crvenom sjajnom koja je bukvalno ista kao i originalna boja modela. Koga zanima više informacija o boji neka pita u komentarima ili gdje god mu odgovara.

Sledeće što sam radio je bilo sređivanje točkova. Sa obzirom da sam htio da napravim model, koji ima efekte kao posle trke, odlučio sam da šmirglam točkove. Ovim se postiglo to da točkovi izgledaju mnogo bolje i realnije. Takođe sam matice na točkovima ofarbao u srebrnu boju, takođe sam koristio Revelovu boju. Sa obzirom da sam dobio informacije od kolega koji se bolje razumiju od mene u F1 da se tih godina točkovi nisu označavali bojama, pa su oznake u plavo i crveno ostale ne urađene. Ukoliko neko ima informacije koje nisu iste sa ovim koje ja imam (a to je da se točkovi obilježavaju od ’95. godine) neka se javi i informiše me. Takođe sam uklonio prednju osovinu sa modela pošto taj dio i ne postoji u originalu na bolidu. Zadnja osovina je ofarbana sprejem u bakarno narandžastu boju, koje je i bila boja na originalu.

Next step was to do some work on wheels. So I decided to send them a little bit so they got that look tha slick tires have. I am pretty happy with the result. Next thing was painting the screws on the wheels and that has gone well also. I am not sure, do the F1 cars had marked sides of tires in that period, so I left them not painted in red and blue. Also if someone has the info about this issue, please inform me, by email, comments, Instagram or any other mean you have.
After tires, there are some steps that I did not documented, and those are painting the axel on the rear tires in copper orange. For this I used spray paint, also for more info on that ask me please. I remover the front axle on the car, because in the original there was none. For better look of that part of the car, I painted plastic in red.
Next in line was interior. The interior I changed in only one thing. The sides of cockpit were painted in beige which is not correct coloring. The sides were made of carbon fiber so I painted them in mate black. It is also Revel color, and those Revel colors are great.

Sledeće na redu je bio enterijer. U enterijeru je promijenjena samo jedna stvar. Kako su strane kokpita bile ofarbane u bež boju to sam morao da promijenim, jer je u originalnu taj dio bio od karbonskih vlakana. Ovaj dio sam ofarbao u mat crnu boju tako da sada izgleda dosta bolje.
 Kako sam već na početku rekao model je bio oštećen. Oštećenje modela je bilo to što je nedostajalo desno prednje krilo. Pošto sam shvatio da će biti dosta teško da se krilo napravi iz dva dijela i da se to sastavi kako treba, odlučio sam da napravim krilo iz jednog dijela što se pokazalo odlično. Jednodjelno krilo sam napravio iz pet segmenata. Prvi je bio kompletno (sa lijevom i desnom stranom) prvo donje krilo, na koje sam zalijepio dva vertikalna dijela krila a na vertikalne sam postavio i gornja dva horizontalna mala krila. Ovim je krilo bilo kompletno, nakon čega sam isturpijao pod da bi bio tanji. Nakon ovog se kompletno krilo zaljepi na gornji dio poda i ovim je ispalo skoro savršeno i ne vidi se da je bilo oštećeno.

As I previously said, the front right wing on the car was broken so I had to fix that. In first race this car had a little different wing, so I made both sides from scratch. Due to difficulties with managing to accurately position the both side of the wing separately I decided to build the wing from one piece. So I made it out of plastic for paper. It is thin plastic, some 0.1mm thin and it is great for making these parts. I rasped the front plastic to make it thinner, than I glued the entire wing made from five pieces. Pieces are, front flat part of the wing (the largest part), on that part I attached the side vertical wings, and then o these two on each side I placed the smaller upper wings. This like assembled part I glued to top side of the plastic part of the car bottom. The wing was painted with gloss black spray paint.


The last but not least were decals. First I removed the existing ones with nail polish remover and that thing, which you can see on the image, was great. I instantly removes the decals without damaging the paint. The new ones were printed in regular sticker paper, and previously were drawn in Corel Draw graphic suite. The printer in the shop was not that good so the color are not the ones that I wanted but that is the least problem. 

Na kraju ono što je takođe vrlo važno su naljepnice. Prvo sam originalne dekale koji nisu odgovarali skinuo skidačem laka za nokte. Sjajna stvar, ovaj skidač ne sadrži aceton i ne oštećuje u opšte farbu a ni lak, dok dekale skida veoma lako i brzo. Nove naljepnice sam nacrtao u Korelu u štampao ih na samoljepljivom papiru. Ova metoda nije najbolja za ovu razmjeru jer se malo vidi razlika ali svakako je preporucujem prije nekih drugih koje su komplikovanije i skuplje.
Za kraj da se osvrnemo na završen proizvod. Ako želite da radite ovako nešto, ili po ovom receptu onda svakako trebate da uradite neke stvari drugačije. Prva greška je to što je previše nizak dio sa rol barom, a iz ovoga slijedi da su i usisnici sa strane manji. Ukoliko budete radili ovaj model ovo svakako se treba izmijeniti. Sledeće je da se trebaju napraviti manje tackice koje predstavljaju šarafe na vjetrobranu, i trebate malo smiriti doživljaj sa sređivanjem auta da liči na bolid koji je upravo završio trku. Ja sam pretjerao, ali kako je ovaj model na toj trci bio uključen u manji udes na početku, vjerujem da nisam toliko pogriješio.

be taller and on its sides should be bigger openings. In this case due to shorter roll bar paneling I made smaller intakes and that should be changed in some future projects. Next one is be aware that you can over do the “after race” effects, as I did here. The last but not least, you should make smaller dots on the windshield, these dots are pins that hold the windshield so these should be smaller.
